Effect of ultrasound pretreatment on anaerobic digestion and sludge dehydration
The management and disposal of sludge is an important economic and environmental factor for the operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Pretreatment of sludge may be necessary to increase digestibility, minimize digestion time and maximize biogas production.
In this study we evaluated the changes experienced by the sludge submitted to pre-treatment by ultrasound after digestion.
Changes in the dehydration parameters (capillary suction time, specific resistance to filtration and bound water) were observed, as well as changes in particle size and an improvement over methane production. The results showed that the application of ultrasound results in a decrease in the particle size associated with the rupture of the leaflets and cell walls, although this effect does not seem significant enough to explain the large increase in biogas production capacity.
